Five Things I'm Loving Now--December 2018

How’s your December going? I’m finding myself strapped for time in pretty much every direction—trying to tie up loose ends at work before a 2-week break and trying to get personal stuff in order before said 2-week break. Even the things that are enjoyable, like holiday parties with friends and time with family, can be stressful at times. So when stressful times arrive, what do you do? I used to bake. And eat. There was a time, and I remember it well, when I was able to mix up a batch of oatmeal cookies from memory and have them in the oven, out of the oven and in my mouth in 22 minutes. These days I’m trying to keep things a little healthier, and focusing my stress-relief efforts in a different way. Here are just a few of those, making my Five Things I’m Loving Now list for December 2018:

  1. Mount Nitanee Kombucha - I’ve learned that keeping your insides happy is a key to overall happiness, health and wellness. And while I take a daily probiotic from Life’s Abundance in capsule form, the addition of another source of probiotic does my belly (and my tastebuds) wonders. This brand is local to my area and is my favorite. I love their motto “tend the garden within”. Truly, we can’t expect to bear fruit of any kind (productivity, energy, kindness, you name it) if that garden is depleted of rich, natural nourishment. If you’re local to the Centre County PA area and haven’t tried Mount Nitanee, check them out. Bonus: It’s a family operation, and they are great people.

  2. Life’s Abundance Body Lotion - I had to laugh when I saw the tag line on this, which is “get off your ash”. But, it’s true! That ashy, dull-looking skin that often comes with winter? Not happening here. I started a tube of this body lotion the second week of September, used it twice a day every day, and just squeezed out the last drop of it on December 10. It’s creamy, not greasy, and smells so delicious that I want to bathe in it—but you only need a little bit to do a lot of good for your skin. Completely plant-based, all organic, I’ve never used anything better. New tube arrived just in time, too, thanks to the quick order fulfillment and delivery from Life’s Abundance!

  3. Orange Theory Fitness - Twice a week at Orange Theory Fitness has been an energizing, amazing complement to the other ways I stay active. I look forward to these workouts and have definitely noticed improvements in endurance, strength, pace and recovery. It also doesn’t hurt that one of my 5:00 a.m. classmates told me that I look thinner. The workout that works is one that you like; and I do like this a lot. All the trainers are great, but special props to my Tuesday man, Derek, and my Friday woman, Amanda, for being such great motivators.

  4. Skirt Sports Toasty Tights - Having your butt cheek feel like a frozen ham hock when you’re out for a run is no fun. I speak from experience. But no more! These tights from my fave gear company have some strategically-placed wind-blocker fabric on the behind and on the thighs (where women get cold most quickly). It’s soft shell on the face side and fleece on the inside, so they are super soft and comfy. Check out Skirt Sports, and use my code as a Skirt Sports Ambassador—1232Joyc—to get 15 percent off. I’ll have an upcoming blog post about why I’ve chosen to partner with this company, besides the awesome clothing!

  5. Stone Works Laundry Pods - I think everyone appreciates clean clothes, but what’s to love about laundry detergent? In my constant quest to use products that are free of toxins, I wanted to bring that to the laundry room as well. Had a few misses in that department, until I found Stoneworks Laundry Pods. They’re plant-based and made with essential oils, they clean our clothes very effectively, they’re not messy, and they fit my budget. I throw one into the back of my front-loader before I put the clothes in, and that’s it. I also like that they come in a paper sack, so there’s no plastic to discard.

There’s enough stress that goes along with the holiday season, so whatever you find that brings you joy, from movement, comfort, or maybe just having clean laundry—practice those things now and right on into the new year!

Stoneworks Laundry pods are my go-to. The pods come across as pretty scent-heavy, but once your laundry is done, the scent is. not over-powering. There is, however, an unscented version. The two scents I like are Olive Leaf (pictured) and Birch. But that’s just my two cents. (See what I did there?)

Five Things I'm Loving Now--November 2018

I love “top five” lists—how about you? I peruse Pinterest, blogs and other sites all the time to learn about new products, pick up tips for a healthier household, and ideas to make life easier. I thought it might be fun to make my own top five list, and who knows, maybe there’s something here that will resonate with you. If so, I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Thieves Wipes from Young Living. I keep a box of these on my desk at work, and once a week at minimum, wipe down my phone, keyboard, and desk. There are several versions of the story about the origin of Thieves oil, but the most common version goes back to the 15th century and the Bubonic plague. The story is that a marauding pack of thieves went from house to house stealing from the recently departed, and they lived through their criminal spree because they wore masks that were treated with a mixture of herbs, spices and oils that prevented them from being afflicted with the plague. I don’t think there’s an actual plague in my office, but clean surfaces and the great smell—I’ll take it!

  2. The Babbel app. I’m having fun with this, trying to learn enough Italian to at least get me through an upcoming trip with a better handle on basic things like money, ordering food, and asking for and understanding directions. Oh I know, almost everyone in Italy speaks at least a little English, but why not try to meet halfway. I tried another language app previously, but I never found much use for the phrase “The horse drinks the water”. Babbel actually includes phrases I will use, like “Io vorrei un vino rosso”. I mean, let the horse have the water—I want red wine!

  3. My Pocketopia capris from Skirt Sports. Love, love, love these! Why? They have totally eliminated my need for a waist or arm belt when I run. A pocket on the outside of each leg, plus a zipper pouch on the back, a key pocket on the waistband, super-soft compressive fabric and the high waist make this one of my favorite bottoms. I have three pairs of them! Phone in the leg pocket, ID in the zip pouch, key on the waist and I am good to go! I have a growing wardrobe of Skirt Sports products, but the Pocketopia is definitely a fave. If you order from Skirt Sports, just tell them I sent you with the discount code 1232Joyc on your order.

  4. Body Lotion from Life’s Abundance. I’m a Life’s Abundance rep, so it’s probably no surprise that a Life’s Abundance product will make a top five list for me, anytime. I’m especially loving the body lotion right now, and eager to see its effect on my skin as we head into the winter season. This all-organic lotion is thick and creamy, without being greasy. Greasiness is probably my biggest complaint about lotions. This absorbs quickly, but leaves my skin feeling really soft.

  5. The Fresh 20 Meal Planning Service. If, like me, you enjoy cooking but occasionally run out of ideas for healthy, do-able meals, you may like this too. I don’t follow it to the letter—sometimes substitutions are necessary because hubby doesn’t like certain foods, or we have farm share veggies to use up—but it’s a great source of basic planning. Plus, if you don’t love what’s on the weekly plan, there are searchable archives (by season, by ingredient, etc.) so you can explore recipes. To me, this is way better than a delivered meal service because I control what goes into it—e.g. local ingredients, controlled salt—and it adds some new things to the repertoire, and it’s budget-friendly. If you think The Fresh 20 is for you, you can check it out here.

That’s my November list. We’ll see what’s floating my boat in December!
