I'm talking clutter today. Norm and I took advantage of a commitment-free Sunday to go to the basement and rid ourselves of some clutter. We're a long way off from being hoarders, but like most people, we just seem to accumulate things over time. Personally, I haven't been able to bring myself to the point of author Marie Kondo ("The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing") but I do believe that a good purge can have positive emotional and physical effects.
Consider these ideas and see if clutter in your life might be partially to blame:
- Exacerbates allergies by inviting buildup of dust mites, dander, mold and other allergens
- Creates a germ haven
- Increases risk of fire and injuries (ever been hit in the head by something falling off a shelf?)
- Decreases odds of exercise (How can you go running when you can’t find your shoes?)
- Makes you late for work and appointments when you can’t find things
- Depletes your energy with its overwhelming presence
After a good morning of purging, my house still may not be the neatest one on the block, but it feels really good to look at what's going out the door in the form of recycling, donations and trash. I feel lighter already!
